How the Clouds Rolled by Under Investivation.
The cloud that was supposed to have been resting upon the ex-school commissioner of Kershaw County has been cleared away, and that gentleman now stands exonerated before the public.
Chief Clerk Norton, of the office of comptroller general, has just returned from Camden, where he made the annual settlements with the county officials. He says that the settlement was a very satisfactory one, and the only trouble was in a few irregularities in the payment of taxes. He said that it has been generally reported for some time that there was a shortage in the accounts or rather school funds disbursed by ex-School Commissioner Hale. He said that after a very full and searching examination of the books he had found that instead of Mr. Hale being short in any way there was the neat llittle sum of $129.79 due him by the State, thus clearing him of any and al charges that can be brought against him. The only fault that could be found was a slight irregularity showing that Mr. Hale had disbursed some the of money by mistake during the wrong fiscal year but that could be easily corrected. He says the foreman of the grand jury, Mr. Joel Hough, was present and assisted him in all the examinations, and both of them failed to find anything wrong. So Mr. Hale is absolutely cleared of any charges that have or may be brought against him.
