THE DEATH OF MR. JOEL HOUGH
Clerk of Court for Kershaw County and a Gallant Confederate Soldier.

Camden, Feb. 12 – Mr. Joel Hough, clerk of the court for Kershaw county, died at his home here this morning in the 66th year of his age.
The deceased was in his office as usual on Saturday last, feeling as well as possible, when he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis in his arm. He went to his home immediately and retired. It was not long before the whole side was affected and finally he lapsed into unconsciousness, in which state he remained until the end came this morning.
Mr. Hough was born in the upper portion of Kershaw county and spent his boyhood days on his father’s plantation. When was was declared he volunteered under Capt. Cunningham and went out with Company G. Second regiment, Kershaw’s brigade. He afterwards served under Capts. C. C. Haile and Jesse Truesdale, respectively. It is said that he participated in all of the actions in which Kershaw’s brigade served. He was twice dangerously wounded and was conspicuous for his bravery on more than one occasion. He served until the end of the war.
Not alone as a soldier has he rendered conspicuous service to his State. For eight years he was superintendent of education for Kershaw county. Later he represented his county two years in the legislature and was clerk of court from 1893 until the time of his death. He was a man of great influence in this county and numbered his friends among the hundreds.
He was married to the daughter of the late Joseph Kirkland and is survived by her, five sons, J. F., S. M., I. C., C. K. and Joel; and two daughters, Carrie and Nannie Hough, also survive him.
The funeral services will be conducted from the Baptist church tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock. The active and honorary pallbearers are as follows; Honorary, Messrs. John T. Thompson, E. S. Nettles, Sr. , W. D. Trantham, C. J. Shannon, Sr., E. B. Cantey, C. L. Evans, J. B. Phelps, A. D. Kennedy, B. F. Haile and Dr. A. A. Moore; active, W. F. Russell, W. M. Shannon, J. R. DeLoache, B. B. Clark, J. D. McDowall, and W. A. Ancrum.
