IN THE “OLD LANG SYNE”
Death of Mrs. John Cantey of Clarendon Recalls Ante Bellum Days.
To the Editor of The State.
I noticed in yesterday issue of The State the Announcement of the death of Mrs. John Cantey, formerly of Camden, but of late years a resident of Clarendon, where, with her daughter, she had spent the closing hours of her life.
Mrs. John Cantey was the daughter of the Hon. John Peter Richardson, governor of South Carolina in 1844. Her brother, John Peter Richardson, filled the executive chair for four years and her grandfather, James B. Richardson, in 1806 was the first “up-country man” to be elected governor of South Carolina.
Mrs. Cantey was descended from an illustrious family, a family who at all times and under all circumstances tendered life, fortune and pledge their honor to maintain the glory of the commonwealth they loved from its inception.
Her home was the rendezvous of the ante-bellum leaders of Southern politics, the bravest and best of the land paid homage to the genial, charming hostess of “Elmwood.” the very seat of Southern hospitality in that old country of Clarendon, as it used to be.
This tribute comes from one who, in the “lang syne,” was the recipient on many occasions of her kindness and from one who to the closing hours of this life with cherish the kindest recollections of her many deeds of charity and gentleness which belonged especially to that era of the old Carolina Days.
