A Memory

Upon the Death of Mrs. J. P. Richardson.

On the morning of January 3, 1910, as night passed into day, the soul of Mrs. Juliana A. M. Richardson passed into an everlasting rest, where but a few brief years gone by her husband had preceded her.

Throughout the broad doman of this State, the announcement of her death will be received in profound sorrow, for so many will recollect her as the gentle hostess of the executive mansion, for it was there she gathered a host of friends around her.

Mrs. J. P. Richardson was born at Burchill plantation, then Sumter district and later Clarendon, on July 12, 1836. Her father was the Hon. William Henry Burchill Richardson, son of Gov, James B. Richardson, who filled the executive chair in 1802-1804.

In 1840-1842 her father-in-law. Gov. John Peter Richardson, became governor of this State, the mother of the late Mrs. Richardson was Dorothy Ann, a daughter of Charles Richardson, who was himself a brother of Gov. James B. Richardson, the first governor elected from the “up-country.”

The ancestors of the Clarendon Richardsons was Gen. Richard Richardson of the “Snow campaign,” and so closely identified with the struggle for independence during the war of the revolution from the commencement to the very end.

Loyalty to country and to friends has ever distinguished these people, and in the old anti-bellum homes of Saint Mark’s parish wide open doors welcomed the wayfarer no matter the condition of life.

From that glorious region came the husband of Mrs. J. P. Richardson, for from 1886 to 1890 Gov. John Peter Richardson for two terms served South Carolina to the beat of his ability-thus it happened that in the course of human events father and son occupied the highest position within the gift of a people.

The writer of this article remembers well the golden era of that section of Clarendon, and a good fortune placed him in their midst, but like the snows of yesterday so many of them in the last few years have passed over the silent river.

“Old Joys remembered still, how strange they seem,”
Down life long vista viewed through unveiled eyes–
Naught but the phantom fabric of a dream,
Only the shadow of a bird that flies,”
