W D. Trantham, One of Kershaw’s Most Prominent Citizens, Dies at His Home in Camden.

Camden, Jan. 24. – W. D. Trantham died here this morning at 10 o’clock. His death was not unexpected as he had been lingering for some time.

The death of Mr. Trantham removes one of the best known and most beloved men, the oldest member of the bar in age as well as practice and the youngest living Confederate veteran in Kershaw county. Mr. Trantham was born in the Flat Rock section of this county, and was the son of Dr. John I. and Elizabeth Drakeford Trantham.

He attended the county schools until 12 years old, then entering King’s Mountain Military academy under
Maj. Micah Jenkins and Capt. Asbury Coward. Mr. Trantham was 13 when the war broke out, and was one of the first to enlist, coming back to Camden to join the Flat Rock Guards, Company G, Second South Carolina under Capt. C. C. Haile. This makes Mr. Trantham one of the youngest soldier of the Confederacy. He was in the battle of Bull Run, afterward had typhoid fever and taken to a hospital in Richmond. He was discharged after ten months’ service and sent home to recuperate.

He reenlisted in 1864. After the war he worked ou a farm until 1867, then entering Wake Forest college, North Carolina, he graduated with first honor in 1871 and returned to Camden and entered law office of James Davis. He was admitted to the bar in 1872. He was county chairman of the Democratic committee in the Reconstruction period. He served two terms in the legislature and was defeated for congress In 1886 and 1896 by close margins and was chairman of the board of trustees of the city schools for a number of years.

Mr. Trantham, was deacon in the Baptist church. After withdrawing from active practice of law in 1905, he was elected, without opposition, probate judge. He resigned on account of failing health.

In 1877 Mr. Trantham was married to Miss Nannie Simmons, daughter of Prof. W. G. Simmons of Wake Forest college. He is survived by a wife, two daughters, Miss Ida Trantham in the government service in Washington, and Miss Nannie Trantham, a student at Winthrop, and five sons, Prof. Harry Trantham of Balyor university, former Rhodes scholar at Oxford from North Carolina; Simmons Trantham, a student at the University of Florida; William Clarence and Frank of this city, and by two brothers, Dr. Henry T. Trantham of Salisbury, N. C. and J. S. Trantham, sheriff of this county.

The funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock at the Baptist church by Rev. M. L. Lawson, who will be assisted by Rev. J. D. Moore of Columbia, former pastor of this church, and Rev. W. B. Gordon of Episcopal church.
