Traveling Over the Capital -to- Capital Route; Pleased With Progress.
United States Highway Engineer W. L. Spoon passed through Columbia this morning on the Capital-to-Capital Highway en route to Augusta. Mr. Spoon is in charge of the highway from a point north of Rockingham, N. C., to Augusta, Ga., his link taking in all of the highway in South Carolina.
Mr. Spoon said that work on the new line of the highway from Cheraw to McBee was now in full swing throughout its entire distance. The first work was begun yesterday in Alligator township and today operations will be commenced at other points on the road. Mr. Spoon declared that the two worst spots in his division of the road were the two blocks of the road running through the small town of Blaney and two block through the town of Brookland, across the river bridge from Columbia. It is understood, however, that both of these towns are expecting to begin improvements on their streets very soon.
Mr. Spoon commended the highest terms the work now bing done on the highway through Kersahw county by Supervisor West. Mr. West is now working on the highway at a point above Camden. Mr. Spoon will return over the highway from Augusta on Wednesday.
