Juries Convict in Number of Cases – One Conviction for Murder.

Camden, Nov. 19. – The fall term of court convened here monday morning with Judge I. W. Bowman presiding. Court stenographer John K. Aull could not be present on account of sickness, and his place was filled by Cliff Langford of Orangeburg. The grand jury made its presentment Tuesday and took occasion to say that the present board of county commissioners had paid exorbitant prices for some of the county supplies and recommended that they used more economy in the expenditure of the county funds. The court will close Saturday and there will be no civil term for this county. The second and third week jurors have been notified not to appear. Cases tried up to Thursday afternoon was as follows:
P. C. Alexander, negro, who attempted to forge a telegram on a negro of this county, but who was detected in the set, was found guilty.
George Nelson, a negro, was tried and convicted of the murder of Jessie Grey, a negro, from the Blaney section. The jury recommended the negro to the mercy of the court and the sentence will probably be for life. He has not yet been sentened.
Ollie Brown, alias Ollie Washington, negro, who shot Murdock Hough several months ago, was convicted and sentenced to serve two years. The shooting occurred at a store at Cassatt and cause considerable excitement at the time.
Alf Haile was tried on two cases charged with violating the prohibition laws, and was found guilty and sentenced to serve five months or pay a fine of $400 on the first count and to serve five months or pay a fine of $300 on the second count.
Merritt Anderson and Thomas Lloyd, the former a white boy, were tried for assault and battery with intent to kill. Anderson, was found guilty of assault of a high and aggravated nature and was sentenced to serve three months on the gang or pay a fine of $75. Lloyd was released. The case grew out of the shooting into an automobile in which Constable Stokes and Magistrate Nicholson and two other men were riding. All of the men were peppered with small shot but none seriously hurt.
Dave Russell was found guilty in his absence for violating the prohibition laws. Russell was found operating a still near the old Revolutionary battleground north of Camden.
In the case of Abe Raley, a white man, charged with abandoning his children on a public highway, upon the recommendation of Solicitor Spigner, Judge Bowman directed a verdict of not guilty in his case.
James Young, negro, charged with assault upon John Stokes, a white man, was found guilty and sentenced to serve three months on the chain gang or pay a fine of $75.
John Gallimore, a white man, was being tried yesterday for assault and battery. He is charged with shooting and seriously wounding H. Britt Croft. The case went on trial on Wednesday afternoon and was completed Thursday. The jury brought in a verdict of guilty at the noon hour and gallimore was sentenced to serve three years.
The case of Robert Sharp, charged with the murder of his father, was set for the latter part of the court. Also the case against J. F. yarborough, Hampton Weaver and Trump Jackson, charged with stealing an automobile, was to have been tried yesterday.
