Young Negro Accused of Murderous Attack on Hotel Proprietor.
Special to The State.
Camden, Aug. 13 – Monroe Johnson, a negro about 18 years of age, was lodged in the city prison early this morning, for having made a murderous attack upon Ellis N. Wilson, proprietor of Hotel Camden.
Mr. Wilson had gone into the dining room, which was dark, to awaken the Negro, who was acting as porter to get ice water for a guest. A fight ensued in the darkness and the Negro dealt Mr. Wilson a blow across the head with a glass vessel, inflicting bad cuts on his face and head. The Negro made a dash out of the hotel and escaped into a dark alley.
Fred Mosely, a Camden boy who is a clerk at the Hotel Jerome in Columbia, was returning to Columbia from a trip to Camden and recognizing the Negro walking in the road near Blaney, stopped his car and leveled a walking stick at him, telling him if he ran he would shoot. The ruse worked and Johnson was placed in Moseley’s car and brought back to Camden.
