Prominent Camden Citizen Died Suddenly at Home Sunday Morning

CAMDEN, S. C., March 11. – Funeral services for John Smyrl Halsall, whose sudden death at an early hour Sunday morning has enshrouded this community in sorrow, will be held at the family residence, on Mill street, at 4 o’clock Monday afternoon, with interment following in the Quaker cemetery of Camden. The passing of Mr. Halsall was attributed to apoplectic stroke.
Local ministers will officiate this afternoon and the following will serve as active pallbearers: L. A. Kirkland, E. C. Zemp, John R. Goodale, S. W. VanLandingham, R. M. Kennedy. Jr., J. H. Osborne.
Mr. Halsall was 39 years of age and was the son of the late and Margaret S. Halsall. He was born in this city and resided here throughout his life. After finishing in the Camden city schools, Mr. Halsall attended College of Charleston and later studied at Davidson college.
Following his return from college to this city, he was for many years prominently connected with the postal service and more recently had been connected with the largest cotton brokerage in this city. Mr. Halsall held membership in the First Baptist church of Camden and in all the Masonic bodies of this city. He was loyal and helpful friend and his unselfish service toward every community ambition placed him in the forefront of local builders who will find in his going-away a place that can not easily be filled.
Besides his mother, now living in Jacksonville, Fla., Mr. Halsall is survived by a widow, who was Miss Retta Halsall, of this city, and three young children, Jack Halsall, Mary Jane Halsall and Retta Halsall; also by his grandmother, Mrs. Mary A. Smyrl of this city, and by one brother, Gilbert Halsall, of Jacksonville. Fla.
