WINTHROP COLLEGE

Rock Hill, April 21. – Last week Winthrop college presented an exhibit of pictures sent out by the Southern States Art league. The object of the League is to bring before the pubic the work of Southern talent, with the hope of stimulating interest and appreciation of art. All of the Southern States were represented in the collection.

There were oil painting, water color, etchings and charcoal drawings. Quite a variety of subjects, some foreign, some American, some typically Southern, were presented. A great many college students and visitors from town enjoyed the opportunities offered. The art department of Winthrop, under the direction of Miss Annie V. Dunn, rendered an excellent service in procuring and displaying this exhibit. Mrs. James P. Kinard spoke of the exhibit in chapel Friday and emphasized its value.

The South Carolina State High School contest in Music and the State Music Memory contest were entertained at Winthrop last week. It is quite a pleasure to the college authorities to cooperate in this movement which is promoting knowledge, skill and appreciation of music. The results are quite gratifying. The concert give by the Charleston Orchestra in the Winthrop Training School auditorium Friday afternoon was enjoyed by a large audience.

The senior sand masquers presented “Alice Sit-By-The-Fire” last Wednesday evening. This was the last appearance of the class of ’29 in a play. It met with a general commendation. Miss Florence Mims, director, and the players are to be congratulated upon the production. The college orchestra contributed the music of the occasion. The cast of characters was: Ruth Hare, Elizabeth Hines, Florence Epps, Rose Ellis, Thelma Hodge, Ethelyn Robinson, Katherine Nesmith, Harriet Pierce, and Frances Early. The following served on committees: properties, Ritchie Anderson; programs, Lucy Hamilton; advertising, Frances Traver.

The April issue of The Winthrop Journal, dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. D. B. Johnson, has been issued. It is quite attractive in design and reflects credit on its editors.

Winthrop college track meet was held Saturday afternoon.

The results of student elections held last Tuesday are as follows: Irmie Yates, vice-president of the Student Government association; Elizabeth Seabrook, secretary; Francis Taylor, assistant secretary; Elizabeth Boyd, treasure, Virginia Coker, dining room chairman; Lucie Cuttino, campus chairman; Marian Hines, house president of Bancroft; Zelime Davis, Margaret Nance, Sara Craig, McLauirn; Clara Mae Kizer, Roddey: Louise Tribble, Breaszeale.
