Camden Man Convicted of Manslaughter in Third Trial for 1926 Killing.
CAMDEN, S. C., Dec 13 – (Ap)- Elmore Jeffers today was under sentence of three years in the penitentiary following his conviction of manslaughter during his third trial for the killing in 1926 of Peter Kirkland.
The first hearing resulted in a mistrial. In the second trail, in October, 1928, he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to three years, but appealed.
The slaying is alleged to have started as the result of an election dispute when Jeffers’ cousin, Thomas C. Jeers, was defeated by G. D. Watson. The shooting took place at Blaney, after a fist fight in which about a half dozen men took part. Elmore Jeffers, who had received several blows, is said to have then pulled out his pistol and opened fire on Kirkland, who died shortly afterwards. Kirkland left a widow and a small child, and Jeffers left his widow and five children.
