Negro Teachers Meet Saturday

Yesterday the Negro teachers of Richland county met in their monthly meeting for the year at Booker Washington high school.

W. A. Perry, president, presided over the meeting. The Rev. F. R. Bowman of Blythewood made the opening prayer. after Perry made remarks concerning the future of the association. C. A. Johnson, chairman of the steering committee made the report concerning the “center study” which is to begin early in January. Teachers in Richland county or vicinity, which included city and rurals, may attend and renew or raise their certificates or get credits on college degrees. The center study will run 14 consecutive Saturdays and teachers are required to specialize in at least two subjects. Teachers from the State college at Orangeburg will do the teaching under the supervision of President R. S. Wilkerson, assisted by C. A. Johnson, supervisor of Columbia Negro schools, and others.

This work has the indorsement of G. Miller Eleazer, county superintendent of education. A. C. Flora, superintendent of Columbia Schools.

The memorial exercises of the late the Rev. R. J. Jenkins, who taught school in Richland county 37 years or more, were held before the closing hour. The Rev. J. W. Neal delivered the principal eulogy. Perry ordered the teachers to stand with bowed heads while the Rev. Riley of Blaney led in prayer.
