Session Held at Booker Washington School – Plan Study Center.
Yesterday the negro teacher of Richland county met in their last monthly meeting for the year at Booker Washington high school.
Prof. W. A. Perry, president, presided. Rev. W. R. Bowman of Blythewood offered the opening prayer. After President Perry made some interesting remarks concerning the future of the association, Prof. C. A. Johnson, chairman of the steering committee, made the report concerning the “study center” which is to begin early in January. Teachers of Richland county, in city and rural schools, may attend and renew or raise their certificates, or get credits on college degree. The study center will run 14 consecutive Saturdays and teachers are required to take at least two major subjects. Expert teachers from the state college at Orangeburg will teach under the supervision of PResident P. S. Wilkinson, assisted by C. A. Johnson, supervisor of the Columbia negro schools, and other noted educators.
This work has the endorsement of G. Miller Eleazer, superintendent of education for Richland county, and A. C. Flora, superintendent of Columbia schools, and has been partially endorsed by the state department of education having given their endoresement.
Memorial service in honor of the late Rev. R. J. Jenkins, who taught school in Richland county 37 years or more, were held just before the closing hour. REv. J. W. Neal delivered the principal eulogy. President Perry ordered the teachers to stand with bowed heads, while Rev. Riley, of Blaney led in prayer.
