Brookland Affairs of Interest

The intermediate Luther league enjoyed a New Year’s party Saturday evening in the Sunday school rooms.

The entertainment committee directed games from 9:30 until 10:30, when the crowd drove to the Riverside Lunchroom for refreshments, motoring from there to Columbia where the New Year’s spirit was in full swing and remaining until the New Year came in. The party was chaperoned by Mrs. L. T. Trotti.

Erby George return to Charleston last Sunday to resume his studies at the Medical College.

Dr. and Mrs. Frank Woods have returned to Lincoln, Nebraska, after spending their weeks with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Woods.

Miss Sue Hall of Columbia was a recent guest of Miss Elaine Price.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer Woods have returned from a visit to their daughter, Mrs. Wade Gibson and Gibson, North Carolina.

Miss Sarah Jackson spent the Christmas holidays with her grandmother, Mrs. Fender and little sister, Betty Jean Jackson and Ehrhardt.

Hugh Gibson and daughter, Elizabeth Gibson, spent last Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gibson, about 5 miles from New Brookland.

Dana Fowler has returned to Newberry College to resume his studies.

Miss Gaynelle Bachman entertained with three tables of bridge during the holidays. Dan Hook received high score prize for men and Mrs. N. C. Raynor for ladies. After cards Miss Bachman, assisted by Miss Orlena Milford, served ambrosia and Lady Baltimore cake.

The Women’s auxiliary of the Presbyterian church met at the home of Mrs. A. B. Bachman Monday afternoon. After business the hostess served sandwiches and cocoa.

Mr. and Mrs. Randall Dangerfield and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Ansel Dangerfield and son have returned home after visiting in Mocks Corner the past week.

Mrs. H. R. Duren and Mrs. S. J. Doyle were joint hostesses to the Columbia Mills Woman’s club Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Duren. After the business session a social hour was enjoyed.

In a musical contest Mrs. B. F. Auman and Mrs. J. M. Mathias were the winners. In another contest Mrs. Fred Rush and Mrs. J. M. Mathias won prizes. Coffee, sandwiches, cake were served.

Mr. and Mrs. Horace Wise, Miss Katie Lou Sharp and Adam Sharp have returned home after spending a short time with Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Wise.

Mrs. C. C. Roberts and son, Robert Thrailkill spent several days in Lexington last week visiting relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Lester Lucas and family of Gaston were the guest of Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Wise last Sunday.

Mrs. R. M. Brown and son, Robert Brown have returned from Jacksonville, Florida, where they have spent the Christmas holidays.

Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Wise and family have returned from Moncks Corner, where they visited their daughter, Mrs. Moses Dangerfield, and family.

The many friends of Mrs. H. M. Rhodes will be glad to learn that she is on the road to recovery after an operation at the Baptist hospital.

A number of friends enjoyed a fish supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Gibson Thursday night.

Mr. and Mrs. Philip Costner and little son, spent the Christmas holidays with the former parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Whitmire.

Mrs. Will Riddle and children are visiting Mrs. Riddle’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. MacKoon and Ware Shoals.

P. A. Brown, manager of Rogers store, and entire family are recovering from an attack of influenza.

John Franklin Swygert has returned to Charleston, where he is attending the Citadel.

The Missionary society of the New Brooklyn Baptist church held its regular meeting Friday afternoon with Mrs Florrie Baker on Augusta street. Mrs. George T Goodwin, president; open the meeting with prayer.

Each member read an article on “Mission Work,” which is to be the topic for this year study. Two sacred numbers were sung. Mrs. G. C. Gaskins played the piano the meeting close with prayer by the president.

L. W. Summers and family have moved here from Eastover where they made their home for the past four months.

Her and Mrs. Clifford Metts and Mrs. Will Metts are spending the weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina, visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Metts and family.

Mrs. Carl Klapman of Batesburg is spending a few days with Mrs. G. W. Klapman and Mrs. Charles Joy.

Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Ross had as their guest for New Year’s dinner, Misses Cleo Evans and Mildred Evans, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Ross, Willeby Ross, L. D. Evans and Mary Goff of Blaney, Mrs. Beatrice Ross of Kershaw, Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Nye of Augusta, Georgia, Mr. and Mrs. Hebert Maddox and daughter, Patricia of Winnsboro and the Reverend T. A. Snyder of the New Brookland.

The Missionary society of the Methodist church met Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. T. C. Canon. Mrs. B. F. Green, who recently moved away, being absent, Mrs. F. G. Whitlock, vice president, open the meeting. A hymn was sung and a short prayer by the pastor, the Reverend T. C. Cannon. A committee composed of three, Mrs. F. G. Whitlock, Mrs. Sam Derrick and Mrs. Bessie Shull were appointed to draw a resolutions of respect to the late Mrs. M. M. Boyd, who was a member of the society. Mrs. Sam Derrick was elected president in Mrs. Green’s place. After business a devotional was led by Mrs. T. C. Canon, who also gave a talk on “Gifts.” In closing a prayer was offered by Mrs. Ballington. The hostess served white fruit cake and coffee.

Mrs. B. F. Green’s Sunday school class gave her a farewell party last Tuesday evening. Mrs. Green has moved to Augusta.
