Agriculture and Home Economics Conference; Mahoney New President
Approximately 250 persons attended the annual conference for teachers of agriculture and home economics held at Clemson college during the later part of last week, according to J. L. Sutherland, assistant state supervisor of education. The conference closed at noon Saturday.
W. M. Mahoney, teacher of agriculture at Honea Path high school was elected president of the South Carolina Agricultural Teachers’ association for next year. Other officers elected were: W. C. James, teacher of agriculture at Sumter, vice president, and P. G. Chastain, teacher at Blaney high school, secretary-treasure.
Members of the executive committee who will serve next year are: District No. 1, F. W. Taylor of Laurens; District No. 2, B. P. Rambo of Sharon high school, York county; District No. 3, J. P. Murphy, Ridge Springs school; District No. 4, F. O. Senn, St. George high school; District No. 5. Guy V. Whetstone, Hill Crest high school, Sumter county.
T. L. Ayres, senior economist for the AAA in Washington, D. C., discussed AAA progress and what it is doing in the South.
The Agricultural Teachers’ association has a paid-up membership of 100 percent. Mr. Sutherland said. Every teacher in the state has been issued a membership card for 1938-39.
Other business matters discussed at the session Saturday morning were group insurance, fairs and exhibits and Future Farmer work.
