FFA officers and editors end meeting

The state officers of the South Carolina Association of Future Farmers of America and the editors of the Future Palmetto Farmer, quarterly state publication, concluded their two-day meeting yesterday at the University of South Carolina. The state officers attending were: Edwin Collins of Conway, president; Dwight Holder of Pickens, vice president; Worth Vassey of Chesnee, secretary; Johnny Boulware of Camden, treasurer, and J. P. Fox, Jr., of Walterboro, reporter. The district editors attending were: Allen McLeod, Pinewood; St. Clair Knight, Summerville; Robert Ballentine, Columbia, and Frank Smith, Easley.

The afternoon and night sessions Friday were spent in making plans for improving the Future Palmetto Farmer, the quarterly state F. F. A. publication. A number of plans were set up for improving the paper, one of which is to issue the paper bi-monthly instead of quarterly as has been done in the past. A good deal of time was spent studing the types of material that should be included in the paper. Definite plans were made as to the material that will come out in the April and June issues.

Some time was spent studying ways in which the Future Farmer speaking contests and Future Farmer judging contests could be improved. A number of plans were set up for improving these contests. It is being recommended by the state officers that each winner in the five district contests receive a gold medal in addition to the $10 first prize that is offered. It is also being recommended that each of the five district provide a cup for the winning team in the district judging contests and a medal for the high scorer of the district.

The morning session Saturday was spent in making plans to improve the three Future Farmers camps now in operation. These camps are located at Tammassee, Murrells Inlet and Bluffton. A portion of the time Saturday was also devoted to the study of fairs and Future Farmers exhibits at fairs. Plans were made to include a program of exhibits other than those connected with state, county and local fairs. These will include exhibits at fat stock shows, horse shows and other live stock shows.

Verd Peterson, state supervisor of agriculture, R. D. Anderson, district supervisor, and P. G. Chastain of Blaney assisted the boys with the meeting.
