Kershaw Land Owners Told Of Army Needs

At the meetings, the army officers and the civilian committees were to schedule meetings at which landowners will be asked to sign agreements allowing troops to pass over their lands.

The army is seeking trespass rights on 260,000 acres in Richland, Kershaw and Fairfield Counties on which large-scale field maneuvers will be held this spring with an estimated 60,000 soldiers participating.

Yesterday afternoon, three Richland County land owners voluntarily signed agreements for their property to be used in the army maneuvers. They were William Lykes, Jr., secretary of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, for 1,150 acres; Clarence Richards for 184 acres and Marshall right for 52 1/2 acres. All of the property was in school district number 17.

A total of 1300 landowners of Richland County are being asked to sign similar papers giving the army the right of trespassing on the property. A series of 12 meetings in the 16 school districts affected are expected to be held within the next two weeks. Mr. like said that blanks for signing the agreement would be available at the chamber of commerce for those who want to go there and sign them.
