CAMDEN, Sept. 12. – The meeting on Better Farm Living and National Defense, held at the court house Tuesday morning under the sponsorship of County Farm Agent W. C. McCarley attracted a large number of interested farmers.
Community meetings, to be held in the near future at Blaney, Timrod, Mt. Pisgah, Three Cism, Antioch, Midway, Pine Grove, Lugoff, Charlotte, Thompson, Gates Ford and San Hill will provide a clearing house or further extension of the doctrines as set forth in the Tuesday meeting.
W. T. Holley, chairman of the Better Farm Living committee opened the Tuesday gathering at the court house, introducing L. B. Massey, district agent who spoke on the outlook for the coming year. Miss Juanita Neeley, district home agent, spoke at lengths on nutrition.
Following the talks by Mr. Massey and Miss Neely, County Agent McCorley and Home Demonstration Agent Margaret Fewell gave summaries of the work that had been done up to this time in the matter of the better farm living program in the county.
W. T. Holley, W. F. Estridge, Florence Elliott, Mrs. Ira Ellis and Mrs. I. J. McKenzie all spoke briefly and discussed what had been accomplished in their respective communities.
Following the program of addresses E. C. Turner explained the pledge card to the committee member present. These Committee member are to make a canvas of the farm men and women in the communities to get them to cooperate in doing one or more of the things listed on the card. These include planting of wheat for home consumption, planting of fall gardens, planting for winter grazing crops, destroying of cotton stalks, obtaining lime or phosphate or both under the AAA program, planting of winter cover corps for soil conservation and the planting of small grains and legumes for hay.
