Captain Simpson Killed in Action

Darlington, Jan. 12 – (Special) – News has been received in Darlington that Capt. Arthur T. Simpson, former member of the faculty of the Lydia high school in Darlington county, was killed in action November 19 in Germany. He had previously been reported missing in action.

Captain Simpson’s wife, Mrs. Louise Timms Simpson, of Winnsboro, and Blaney, received the message from the war department. His work in the field of agriculture was considered unusually outstanding, and he had established one of the first community canneries in this section of the state, still in operation in the Lydia school, near here.

He received two promotions with the 86th division, while training at Fort Benning, Ga., Camp Pickett, Va, Camp Blanding, Fla., Camp Howze, Tex., and Camp Livingston, La.

Captain Simpson went overseas in July of last year as a replacement officer, and he was stationed in England for several weeks. He went to France later, and into action with the 26th division in November.

He was a son of Mrs. Mary Simpson, and the late A. T. Simpson, Sr., of Blaney. He received his education in Blaney school, and was graduated from Clemson college.

He is survived by his widow, his mother, and two small sons.
