Kershaw Sheriff Is Found Dead; No Inquest

CAMDEN, March 20- (U.P) -No inquest will be held in the death of Kershaw County Sheriff J. H. McLeod, 55, who was found dead at his home here last night, Coroner J. Purdy Lee said today.

“There is no possibility that death could be anything but self-inflicted in this case,” Lee said.

McLeod was found in his bed with a gunshot wound in his head, a gun at his side, shortly after 10:30 o’clock last night when his daughter, hearing shots, raced to the bedroom.

Lee said he was killed instantly.

McLeod had been a law enforcement officer at Camden for 24 years.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of his son, J. H. MeLeod, Jr., deputy sheriff, who was absent in New York.

Survivors include his wife, two sons and two daughters. He was a Shriner, Kiwanian, and member of the Methodist church.

Surviving besides a widow, are two sons, Lieut. Francis McLeod, in France, J. H. McLeod, Jr. deputy Sheriff of Kershaw county; four daughters, Mrs. D. B. Allen of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. M. E. Moody, of this city, Mrs. Norman Truesdale of the Pines, Camden, and Doris at home: also, three brothers, Larry McLeod, of Lancaster; Thomas, of Honeybee, Ky., and Donald, of Blaney; two sisters, Gertrude McLeod of Augusta, and Mrs. Mamie Trotter of Columbia. He was born in West Wateree section, Kershaw county.

Kershaw Sheriff Commits Suicide; Lee Takes Over

Camden, March 20 (Special) – Purdy Lee, Kershaw county coroner, has taken over the duties of the office of sheriff as required by law following the death by a self-inflicted gunshot wound of Sheriff J. H. McLeod, active in law enforcement in the county for the past 21 years.

Mr. Lee will serve as sheriff until Governor Ransome. J. Williams names a successor to the late sheriff. It is believed that this appointment will be forthcoming soon.

No announcement as to the funeral plans in connection with the McLeod death have been forthcoming for the family is awaiting the arrival here tomorrow of undersheriff J. H. McLeod, Jr., who was in New York on business at the time his father committed suicide.

Mr. McLeod had been deputy sheriff and sherfiff for over 21 years, holding the latter office practically all of this time. He was prominent Shriner, member of the Kiwanis club and the Methodist church. In all civic affairs of the community he was active.

He leaves besides, his widow, two sons, Lieut. Francis McLeod in France, H. J. McLeod, Jr., undersheriff of Kershaw county; four daughters, Mrs. D. B. Allen of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. M. E. Moody of this city, Mrs. Norman Trusdale of The Pines, Camden, and Miss Doris McLeod of the home; three brothers, Larry McLeod of Lancaster, Thomas of Honeybee, Ky., and Donald of Blaney: two sisters, Gertrude McLeod of Augusta and Mrs. Mamie Trotter of Columbia. Mr. McLeod was born in the West Wateree section of Kershaw county 55 years ago.

Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Lyttleton Street Methodist church with the Rev. Henry Collins of the Methodist and the. Rev. J. B. Caston of the Baptist church in charge. Interment will be made in the quaker cemetery.
