A flurry of 14 candidates for office sent the number of qualified entries in Richland county contests for public office to 81 today. The number offering for the office was the greatest in the county in two decades. The deadline for candidates to qualify came at noon today.
Their fate, including 21 cadidates for the House of Representatives (seven to be elected), will be decided by the Democratic voters at the August 13 and September 3 primaries.
The candidates who today annouced for the House, raising the entry list to 21 included Zach McGhee, Columbia attorney, Francis L. Rawl, war veteran and cattle raiser of near Lykesland, and John W. Kirby of Columbia, oxygen technician and war veteran.
An incumbent member of the House, Heyward Brockington, who has also served as county senator, did not qualify for re-election.
With enrolment slow, it did not appear likely that the county would approach its estimated potential 25,000 votes by the June 25 deadline for enrolling.
A series of contests have developed including races for the Senate, House, supervisor, solicitor (Fifth Judicial Circuit which includes Kershaw county), and county commissioners, for six magisterial districts.
Youths To Vote
Added to the races will be two new factors which will be watched with interest by the electorate: The admission of 18-19-20 year olds to primaries for the first time and the World War II veteran vote, estimated at potentially one-fifth (5,000 votes) fo the county’s total.
In the individual races, Joe E Berry, incumbent state senator will be opposed by Yancey A. McLeod.
In the supervior’s race are six candidates to the position held by H. H. Hinnant, who does not plan to offer for re-election, C. Laney Talbert, J. J. Lowman, John L. Cotton, H. L. Shealy, Ernest M. DuPre and Sidney S. Blackburn.
Three In Solicitor’s Race
In the solicitor’s race, another hot contest looms in the three-corner race between T. Pou Taylor incumbent, opposed by Pat H. Nelson and Williams P Donelan.
Races have developed in the positions for count commissioner in which commissioners are elected from teh following townships: Dutch Fork, Columbia, Hopkins, Upper, Lower, Blythewood and Center.
Six contests have developed in magisterial districts, including Waverly, frequently a hot spot politically; upper township, Killian, Eastover, Dutch Fork and Pontiac.
As far as individual precients go, probably the liveliest of the county’s 49 will be at Eastover where two local contests (commissioner and magistrate) have developed in addition to a close interest in the supervisor’s race because of local angles.
Glenn C. Addison withdrew today as a candidate for county commission from Lower township. Two others entered the same race, however, D. T. Holt and F. S. Price.
