2 Commissioner Races Not Opened By Committeemen

The Richland county Democratic executive committee yesterday voted not to re-open the county commissioners, contests in Center and Columbia townships, where only one aspirant is left in the races.

The committee voted to refund the entrance fee of the late A. G. Dent to Mrs. Dent and also to recomment to the county delegation that she receive gubernatorial appointment to fill the unexpired term as Columbia township comissioner until January 1, 1947, should she care for the position.

As a result of the committee’s action, J. G. (Jock) Wilson is unopposed in Center township following Earl J. Jacobs‘ withdrawal, and Ed C. Harris is unopposed in Columbia township following Mr. Dent’s death.

At the meeting held in the Hotel Wade Hampton, the committee also voted to pay the county purging committee $5 a day, and broke precedent by voting themselves $3 a day and five-cent mileage for attending executive meetings – provided the party has funds to make such payment.

Fifteen candidates, unopposed in the current races, were declared party nominees by unanimous vote. Their names will not appear on the ballots.

The committee also:

Approved action to employ mangers and clerks for the forthcoming August 13 and September 3 primaries at $5 a day;

Ruled that Gonzales Gardens residents would continue to vote in Ward 9. The enrollment book will be kept at Macauley’s Drug store, Taylor street on Wednesday and Thursday for Gonzales Gardens residents.
