FEDERAL AID

Figures Show Status Of State’s Hospital Program

Federal-aid public health and hospital projects totalling $8,569,157.51 were underway, approved or pending in South Carolina as of February 15.

A list of the approved or pending projects was made available to legislature as information by the State health department’s hospital division, headed by Dr. C. L. Guyton.

A break-down shows that the federal government is putting up $2,783,394.91, or one-third of the total cost, while local sub-divisions are putting up the other two-thirds, or $5,785,762.60.

Except in cases where state institution are concerned, no state funds are involved in the construction. County and community projects are underwritten locally.

The hospital division of the State health department is the certifying agency and liaison between the local sub-divisions and the federal government.

It submitted the project list to the legislature to support its request for administrative funds.

Projects enumerated include public health centers and auxiliaries, $1,448,739.04; general hospitals, $5,481.790.07, and the State hospital, $1,638,628.40.
