Linder Benjamin Smith was born January 31, 1887, Longtown, Fairfield, South Carolina, USA, the son of John William Smith and Priscilla Eliza Spurrier Smith.

1900 Census Information:

According to the United States Census recorded on June 2, 1900, John Smith (47) owned a home in Fairfield County, South Carolina. Also in his home was his wife, Priscilla Smith (37). It was reported that they had been married for 16 years, she reported have birth 10 children, 7 of whom still survived. Those children still in the home are as follows; Linda Smith (13), May Smith (11), Marina Smith (9), Charlie Smith (7), James Smith (5), Sarah Smith (2) and Annie Smith (2 weeks old). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina, except John Smith; John Smith was a farmer.

1910 Census Information:

According to the United States Census recorded on May 20, 1910, John Smith (57) owned a home in Fairfield County, South Carolina. Also in his home was his wife, Pracella Smith (47), It was reported that they had been married for 25 years; and their children; Linder Smith (23) and his wife of less and a year, Mary Belle Smith (16), Mae Smith (20), Marion Smith (17), Charlie Smith (15), Jimie Smith (14), Sarah Smith (12), Annie Smith (10), Viola Smith (8) and Nora Smith (4). All family members were reported to have been born in South Carolina, except John Smith; John Smith was a farmer and all of the children except for Nora were laborers on the farm.

1949

Funeral service for Lindler Benjamin Smith, 62, of Blythewood, will conducted at 5 p.m. today, September 9, 1949, at Smyrna Methodist church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The services will be conducted by the Rev. L. D. Hamer, assisted by the Rev. A. L. Willis and the Rev. Herbert Spell.

Lindler Benjamin Smith died at his residence at 2:20 Thursday afternoon, September 9, 1949, after an extended illness.

Mr. Smith was born in Longtown, the son of the late John W. Smith and Priscilla Spurrier Smith, both of Fairfield county. He was twice married, first to the late May Belle Rabon Smith, and later to Mrs. Mary Crumpton Smith. He was a farmer and a member of the Smyrna Methodist church.

He is survived by his widow; five daughters, Mrs. Lillie B. Curtis of Columbia, Mrs. Clara Beckham of Blythewood, Mrs. Ethel Shuler of Caracas, Venezuela, and Mrs. Estelle Blair and Mrs. Alberta Maxey, both of Columbia; six grandchildren; one brother, James C. Smith of Lumberton, N. C.; six sisters, Mrs. Mae Swan of Columbia, Mrs. Marion Abbot of Blaney, Mrs. Sadie Bolkin of Blaney. Mrs. Ann Wagnon, Mrs. Lenora Cheek, and Mrs. Viola Black, all of New Orleans, La.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers will be Herbert Fry Boykin, F. B. Cooper, D. T. Branham, Harold Abbott, Raymond Boykin and Tillman Rabon.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Edmunds, Arthur Hines, D. W. Roof, John Castine, Brooks Abell, William Balentine, Grover Wilson, Willie Boney, Jack Bailey, Dr. T. A. Pitts, Dr. J. F. Dobson, Dr. Pierre LeBorde, Dr. Henry F. Hall, Dr. Robert Watkins, Thomas Wilds, Hiram Allen, Robert Creech, Glenn Dowey, Leonard Paschal, Sam Brown, J. B. Herion, Jeff Balentine, E. T. Bowen, Will Abell, Talley Boney, and Earl Boney.

All pallbearers are requested to meet at the church promptly at 5 o’clock.

The body will remain at Dunbar Funeral home until the time of the services.
