The cast of “Jack and The Beanstalk,” the first of three plays to be presented by the Columbia Junior theater under the direction of Mrs. Mary Lou Kramer, was announced today.
There will be three performances of the play. An evening performance on Friday Oct. 27, a matinee and an evening performance on Saturday, Oct 28.
Scrappy Dobbins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ragland Dobbins, will play the part of Jack with Sylvia Jacobs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace T. Jacobs (Clara Mae Jacobs) and a student at Ursuline high school, playing the role of his mother.
Jack Nixon, son of the Rev and Mrs Eugene Nixon and a Hand junior high school student, will portray the butcher. Gelene Duncan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alderman Duncan, a student at Brennen, will take the part of the fairy, and Dick Breeland, a Dreher high school teacher, will portray the giant.
Barbara Fripp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Fripp and a Brennen student, will be Gold Piece; Dell Dutrow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dutrow and a Taylor pupil, will be the hen, and Lynn Talley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Cotrell Talley and Schneider student, will be the harp.
in the role of Buttercup, the cow, will be Paul Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McElveen.
Actors in the prologue which precedes the three-act play include Jimmy Fuller, son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Fuller and a student at Hand junior high school, as a property man; Carolyn Merritt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Merritt, also of Hand, as the young mother, and Dickie Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson, a student at Good Shepherd parochial school, as the little boy.
Members of the technical staff have not yet been selected for the production. All Junior theater members interested in helping with props, scenery, costumes, make-up or box office work are asked to call Mrs. Kramer at 9824.
The Junior theater is sponsored by the Columbia Town theater in copperation with the Junior League.
Membership tickets for the Junior theater are now on sale at the Town theater, 1012 Sumter street, and are priced at $1.25, Membership tickets entitle the holder to season tickets to the three Junior Theater productions during the year, to try out for participation in these productions, and to attend the morning workshops.
These workshops will be conducted on Saturday morning at Mrs. Kramer’s junior playhouse, 729 Kawana road. They will be divided into two groups one for preschool through sixth grade students and the other for seventh-grade through high school students.
The workshops will include instruction and participation in acting, set designing, costuming, make-up, audience manners, stage terminology, etc.
