City of Camden Votes Overwhelmingly for Sunday Amusements
Camden, April 16 – (Special) – In a recent “advisory referendum” the voters of Kershaw County by an overwhelming majority declared against Sunday amusements within the county. The vote was 317 for a continuance of the present practice of Sunday entertainment while 940 voted in the negative.
The referendum was provided by the legislative delegation of Senator J. Clator Arrants and Representatives Donald Holland and John Baker to secure an expression from the voters as to their preference in the matter. The next step, awaited with considerable trepidation on the part of city residents, will e whether the result is to be presented to the general assembly for ratification, or since the vote within the city itself, the only community in the county having a theater, was strongly for the Sunday amusements, the matter will remain in status quo.
The city of Camden voted 225 to 125 for Sunday amusements, vote totals of 93 to 34 in the third and 83 to 27 in the fourth wards piling up the affirmative expression. In the first and second wards the voting was 13-15 and 36-49 against the amusements.
Outlying areas were responsible for the heavy vote against the amusements program. In Blaney, there were 89 votes against amusements and but two for. In Cassatt, the vote was non for and 25 against. In Kershaw 57 votes were against amusements and but one for. In the Buffalo section 55 votes were cast against Sunday amusements and none for.
