Blythewood Man Seriously Hurt In Road Accident

Otis B. Raines, Jr., 26, of Blythewood and Columbia, was in “poor condition at the Columbia hospital emergency room late late night after being struck by a truck one-half mile south of Blythewood on Highway 21 at 8:30 last night.

Raines, an employee of the Columbia Coca-Cola Bottling company was on his way home from work when the accident happened. He had gotten off a Greyhound bus in front of his home and was walking around behind the bus to cross the street, investigating officers said when the bus began to pull out and as Raines came from behind it he was struck by a 1951 Chevrolet stake bodied truck driven by John Carnes of Route 2, Pageland, a farmer.

Riding in the truck with Mr. Carnes was Ben T Sapp of Pageland.

E. L. Marley of 3601 Coleman street and Dr. E. E. Scott of South Ott road were traveling toward Columbia in an automobile behind the truck when the incident occurred.

Mr. Marley and Doctor Scott, a dentist, rendered assistance to the stricken man until highway patrolmen arrived and called an ambulance. Mr. Raines was taken to the Columbia hospital in an ambulance from the Paschal-Regal funeral home.

The accident was investigated by Highway Patrolman O. L. Derrick and T. E. Boney, magistrate’s constable at Blythewood.

Funeral Friday For Otis Raines Accident Victim

Funeral Services for Otis Raines, Jr., 26, of Blythewood, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Sandy Level baptist church and burial will be in the church cemetery.

He died at 2:50 today at the Baptist hospital from injuries received when he was struck by a truck near Blythewood.

Mr. Raines was born in Blythewood, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Raines, Sr.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lula Taylor Raines; two children, Betty Louise Raines and William Otis Raines; three sisters, Mrs. Allie Mae Newton, Pelion; Mrs. Effie Brazell, Dentsville, and Miss Rachel Raines, Blythewood; one brother, John William Raines, Winnsboro; and one half-brother, Sgt. William D. Scott, stationed in Germany.

The body is at Paschal-Regal Funeral Home.

Otis Raines, Jr., Accident Victim, Dies; Rites Set

Otis Raines, Jr., 26, who was fatally injured when struck by a truck one-half mile south of Blyethwood Wednesday night, died at 2:50 Thursday morning in the Columbia hospital.

Mr. Raines, an employee of the Columbia Coca-Cola Bottling company, was returning home when the accident occured. He had stepped from a Greyhound bus and was crossing highway 21, from behind the bus, when he was struck by a 1951 Chevrolet truck driven by John Carnes of Pageland.

He was taken to the Columbia hospital in an ambulance from the Paschal-Regal funeral home, but efforts to save him failed.

Mr. Raines, who was born at Blythewood, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Raines, Sr., is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lula Taylor Raines; two children, Betty Louise Raines and William Otis Raines; three sisters, Mrs. Allie Mae Newton of Pelion, Mrs. Effie Brazell of Dentsville, and Miss Rachel Raines of Blythewood; one brother, John William Raines of Winnsboro; and one half-brother, Sgt. William D. Scott, stationed in Germany.

Funeral service will be held at 3 o’clock this afternoon from the Sandy Level Baptist church at Blythewood, conducted by the Rev. Mark Osborne and the Rev. George Walker. Interment will be in the church cemtery.

Active pallbearers will be Richard R. Hood, James Watts, Bill Outlaw, Ben Trapp, Lucian Shepard, and Billy Edwards.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Starnes, O. B. Mills, Thomas Boney, W. E. Boney, Tommy Sharpe, Harry Wilson, Elton Wilson, and Roger Wilson.

All pallbearers, active and honorary, have been asked to meet at the church at 2:55 this afternoon. The body is at the Paschal-Regal Funeral home.
