The wedding of Miss Mary LeNeve Thomas and Jennings Bryan Grainger of Florence took place at 8 p.m., Feb. 21 in the First Baptist Church. Joe Burnette, educational director of the church, officiated.
M. Berry Seay, organist; Mrs. Lloyd Hendricks, violinist, and deck Taylor and Mrs. S. N. Woodard, soloists, rendered the wedding music.
The ushers were Maynard Hoyt Grainger Jr., of Florence, brother of the bridegroom; Carroll Grainger of Fair Bluff, N. C., cousin of the bridegroom, Charles Thomas of Knoxville, Tenn. and Columbia, brother of the bride; Robert Costner of Charleston, cousin of bride; Ralph Johnson of Columbia and Aiken’ W. Alfred Smyrl, William Spencer and W. Curtis Reames, all of Columbia. Frank Thomas brother of the bride and Woody Sanford lighted the candles before the ceremony.
Miss Mary Harvey of Washington, D. C., cousin of the bride, was maid of honor, and Mrs. James H. Lesesne of Spartanburg, sister of the bridegroom, was matron of honor. They wore dresses of violet net having full double skirts over taffeta and fitted bodices ruffled in front with matching velvet jackets. Their headpieces were of braided velvet and tiny face veils to match their dresses, and they carried bouquets of yellow roses.
The bridesmaid were Misses Betty Harvey and Romesa Jaco, cousins of the bride, Eliza Herndon and Joan Gayden, Mrs. W. Alfred Smyrl and Mrs. Curtis Reames. They wore wistaria dresses made identical to those of the honor attendants with matching headpieces. They also carried yellow roses. Rhinestone necklaces completed their costumes.
Katherine Foran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Foran, and Nikki Walker, were daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben K. Walker, were flower girls. They wore wistaria net dresses having fitted bodices trimmed with tiny ruffles and double skirts over taffeta with ruffles at the hipline.
Johnnie Jacobs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace T. Jacobs (Clara Mae Jacobs), was the ring bearer.
The bride, who was given in marriage by her grandfather, C. R. Costner, was lovely in her wedding gown with train of Chantilly lace over satin and nylon-tulle. The fitted bodice was buttoned down the front and was finished with a Queen Anne collar and long sleeves ending in calla lily points over the hands. She wore a cameo brooch encircled with pearls at the neck. Her gingertip veil of imported bridal illusion was attached to a Juliet cap of Chantilly lace embroidered with see pearls. The bride carried a bouquet of white roses centered with a white, purple-throated orchid.
Marshall T. Prince was the best man.
Miss Jennie Marie Thomas, aunt of the bride, wore a dress of pink Chantilly lace over taffeta, and a purple orchid corsage.
Mrs. M. H. Grainger, Sr., mother of the bridegroom wore a toast-colored Romaine crepe dress with beaded neckline, and a purple orchid corsage.
Immediately following the ceremony, the bride’s aunt, Miss Jennie Thomas, entertained at a reception at the Baptist Student Center, 1618 Pendleton street. Assisting the bride and the bridegroom, in receiving were her aunt, Miss Jeannie Thomas, and grandfather, C. R. Costner; also Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Cloyd, Mrs. R. D. Gregg and Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Parks. The register was in charge of Miss Mary Ann Roberts and Miss Betty Jean Sanford. Serving were Mrs. T. M. Herndon, Mrs. Maude Miscally, Mrs. Leila Sanford, Mrs. H. T. Jacobs, Mrs. W. A. Foran, Mrs. L. W. Hammond, Mrs. Albert Ruffin, Mrs. Elliott Simkins and Misses Dolores Hammond, Linda Carter, Betty Lee Turner and Mary Alice Cloyd.
During the evening the bride and bridegroom left for their wedding trip to Florida and upon their return will make their home in Greenville. For traveling the bride wore a gold wool flannel suit, gold hat and gloves, black shoes and bag.
Mrs. Grainger is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Thomas of Columbia. She was graduated from the University of South Carolina in January.
Mr. Grainger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Hoyt Grainger, Sr., of Florence. He was graduated from the University of South Carolina in June, 1952, and is now associated with the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company.
