Burns Seeks Kershaw Post As Write-in

WESTVILLE, Sept. 12 – (Special) – H. E. Burns, area superintendent of the Baron DeKalb School here, has offered as a write-in candidate for superintendent of education for Kershaw County.

“My campaign for this office began several years ago when my friends in Kershaw County supported me so grandly in my 1950’s race for superintendent of education,” Mr. Burns said.

A native of Columbus, Ga., Mr. Burns, 41, moved with his parents to Camden in 1920 and he enrolled in the Camden schools. He was graduated from Camden High School in 1933, where he was president of his class, and in 1937 received his B. A. degree from Furman University. He served in the U. S. Army from 1944 to 1946 during World War II and in 1946-47 was training officer and special investigator for the Veterans Administration.

He received his Masters degree from the University of South Carolina in 1919 and was principal, coach and band director at Blaney High School from 1948 to 1952.

Mr. Burns is entering his fourth year as superintendent of Barron DeKalb School. He is married to the former Miss Iva Broome, Camden nurse, and they have four children.
