TWO INJURED

New Wreck Occurs At Site of Fatality

To persons were taken to Columbia Hospital this morning after a two-car collision at Hampton and Harden streets, the same area of an accident Sunday where one person was killed and another seriously injured.

Mrs. Cynthia Burgess, 19, of 3306 River Dr., and her husband, Phil, both were admitted to the hospital this morning. The driver of the other car, Mrs. Alice S Daly, 1529 Shirley St, apparently was not hurt, officers said.

In connection with the fatal accident Sunday a 22-year-old woman, Sirnovia Williams, was today fined $25.50 or 30 days for interfering with police officers after Officer Sam Howell told Judge John I. Rice in Recorder’s Court that the woman created a state of confusion at a wreck’ scene here Sunday where one woman was killed and another seriously injured.

Howell told Judge Rice that the woman began directing traffic around the scene even though be was already performing this duty on the 1400 block of Harden Street where a wreck had just taken the life of Irene Nelson, 40, of Blaney, and injured Bertha Harris.

Motorists Hesitated

Howell said some motorists hesitated, not knowing what they should do, when the woman began directing traffic. The confusion led to a traffic jam, Howell said.

The accident occurred at 2:10 p. m. when a car driven by Kenly Crumpton, 31, of 1821 Gregg St., at the two women who were standing on the median strip.

The Harris woman was reported in critical condition in Columbia Hospital.

Crumpton Held

Crumpton is being held for investigation, City Police said today.

An inquest is scheduled for Fri day night at 7:30 p. m., Richland County Coroner Cecil Wiles said.

The police report said that Crumpton’s car was attempting to pass a car on the left as he traveled South on Harden, went out of control and traveled down the

median strip 90 feet before striking the two pedestrians.

One of the woman was knocked 67 feet and the other 96 feet, the report said.

Traveled 210 Feet

The car traveled 210 feet before stopping, the report said.

Investigating were Coroner Wiles, Capt. Bert Friday of the Columbia Police Traffic Division, Sgt. P. L. O’Quinn and Officers R. C. Kirby and F. J. Revetta.

In today’ accident the Burgess car, a 1961 Corvair, was going east on Hampton and turning
north on Harden, officers said. The Daly vehicle, a 1958 Plymouth, was going west on Hampton at Harden Street. The two autos collided at the intersection of Hampton and Harden.

Suffers Bruises

Mrs. Burgess suffered bruises and brasions and Burgess was admitted with a head injury.

Mrs. Burgess told officers that she had been called to her husband’s place of employment on Devine Street to take him to a doctor. She said she was on the way to the doctor’s office with her husband.

No charges were filed this morning but the investigation is continuing.
