50 Gallon Liquor Still Destroyed

An Alcohol Tax Unit agent, two Richland Sheriff’s deputies and a S. C. Law Enforcement Division agent destroyed a 50-gallon copper still, 400 gallons of mash and 4 1/2 gallons of whiskey and arrested two men, one from Lugoff and Blaney, in a raid Wednesday.

The still site was on a small creek just off Spears Creek Road between Percival Road and Pontiac, deputies said today.

Charged with manufacture and possession of illegal whiskey and an illegal distillery were Danny Richardson, 51, of Lugoff, and Carl Scalf, 23, of Blaney, the Sheriff’s office said.

Making the raid were ATU Agent Howard Ledford, SLED Agent L. R. Harmon and Deputies C. E. Brooks and Bennie Dixon.

Officers said the same two men were arrested by county officers at the same location for a similar offense last month.
