Big Races Saturday Night

Top Dragsters at Blaney

Saturday night one of the South’s largest super Stock meets will be held at Blaney Drag Strip in Elgin. The fastest super stocks in the East will be competing for the $1,600 purse.

NHRA National Champion Don Nicholson will be there in his 427 Comet to put claims on the big money, but he will encounter some tough competition when he runs against Marion Burnside’s Hemi-Head Plymouth.

There has been an eagerness in both the Burnside and Nicholson camps to meet one another on the quater-mile battleground.

This will be the first meeting between these two war horses.

Hubert Platt in his “Georgia Shaker” Ford has it in for Hemi-Head in General and Burnside in Patricular. Last Saturday at Greer Drag Strip, Platt lost his second place “Mr. Eliminator’ title to Burnside’s Plymouth in a best two-out of-three match race.

Other pre-entries from the FoMoCo camp are Harold Denton from Raleigh, N. C. in the “Coward” Ford, B. E. Thomas out of Georgia in the “Strip Teaster” Fairlane, and Henry Easterby of Columbia in the “Charlie Brown” Ford. As usual there will be several late entries.

Several “Button-Pushers” – As MoPar drivers are called by FoMoCo- have entered the running. Floyd Bessinger out of Atlanta, driving “Robert’s Dynamite No. 2.” is one of the strongest Hemi-Heads around, Bill Bair from Raleigh will be driving his own hemi-head, and Billy West, also of Raleigh will be piloting another Hemi.

Big Tom Ferrell of North Carolina will be driving a four-speed wedge-head Plymouth and Bill Tysinger of South Carolina will have his automatic wedge-head there. Jim Collier and Engineering Associates will be sporting the Ramcharger Dodges.

Even though there will be five complete rounds of Super Stock runs, all Gas, little Stock and Modified classes will be running for the usual purse. Trial runs begin at 4 p.m. and eliminations begin at 8 p. m.
