Rev. Arthur L. Wood services set Sunday

The Rev. Arthur Lewis Wood, 74, of 2346 Ashton St., founder of two Columbia Baptist churches, died last night in the Providence Hospital.

He was founder of Victory Baptist Church and also the Alpine Baptist Church and served as pastor of Victory Baptist Church until his retirement two weeks ago.

Also, he held numerous other pastorates in South Carolina.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Victory Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Waters, the Rev. W. L. Gladden and the Rev. Johnny Johnson. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Hal Wood, Fred Wood, Randy Wood, Jimmie Wood, Furman Golden, Jr., and Floyd Sheriff.

The casket will be placed in the church Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Rev. Mr. Wood was born in Waterloo, a son of Henry Arthur and Lula Beale Wood.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clydie Pace Wood; three sons, Fred Henry Wood of Pensacola, Fla., Bobby Lee Wood of Greenville and Ronald Pace Wood of Calhoun, Ga.; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Coley of Ashville, N. C.; three brothers, Jall Wood of Greenwood, Frank Wood and Cecil Wood of West Columbia; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Wells of Ninety Six, Mrs. Maude Davis and Mrs. Frances Oakley of Greenwood and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Hal, Fred, Randy and Jimmie Wood, Furman Golding and Floyd Sheriff.

Arthur Lewis Wood, Baptist Pastor, Dies

The Rev. Arthur Lewis Wood, 74, of 2 346 Ashton St., founder of two Columbia Baptist churches, died Thursday at Providence Hospital.

Born in Waterloo, he was a son of Henry Arthur and Lula Beale Wood. He was the founder and former pastor of Victory Baptist Church, retiring just two weeks ago. The Rev. Mr. Wood was also the founder of Alpine Baptist Church of Columbia.

Mr. Wood held numerous other pastorates in South Carolina, including Spears Creek Baptist church of Pontiac, Gap Greek Baptist Church of Travelers Rest, Mountain Springs Baptist Church of Piedmont, Cannon Memorial Baptist Church of Central, and the Six and Twenty Baptist Church, Ward Memorial Baptist Church and Corinth Baptist Church of Anderson County.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Clydie Pace Wood; three sons, Fred Henry Wood of Pensacola, Fla., Bobby Lee Wood of Greenville and Ronald Pace Wood of Calhoun, Ga.; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Coley of Asheville, N.C.; three brothers, Joel Wood of Greenwood and Frank and Cecil Wood of West Columbia; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Wells of Ninety Six and Mrs. Maude Davis and Mrs. Frances Oakley of Greenwood; and nine grandchildren.
