5 pedestrians among 15 S. C. traffic deaths

A man hit while sitting in a road became the fifth pedestrian and the 15th person killed in weekend traffic deaths on South Carolina highways, the state Highway Patrol reported.

Hal Wendell Todd, 45, of Conway, died when struck by a car 5 a.m. yesterday. Todd was sitting on secondary road 548 about 4 1/2 miles west of Conway in Horry County, the Highway Patrol reported.

Cervest Ann Williams, a 29-year-old Greenville woman, was hit and killed at 2:35 a.m. yesterday at the intersection of S. C. 81 and secondary road 475 in Greenville County, troopers said.

Williams James Bowman, a 46-year-old Bishopville man, was hit and killed at 8 p.m. Saturday on secondary road 34 in Lee County, and 19 year-old- Cleveland Elliot of St. Stephen was also hit and killed Saturday about two miles east of St. Stephen on S. C. 45 in Berkeley County.

The driver whose car hit Elliot did not stop, and troopers are still searching for a truck with a dented front.

Fatals

Clifton Succh, 10, of Andrews was hit by a car and killed while riding his bicycle on secondary road 525 in Williamsburg County 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Burnette Wayne Munn Jr., 24, of Elgin, died 1:15 a.m. yesterday when the car he was driving hit a tree on secondary road 37, two miles off highway 5 in Kershaw County, troopers said.

Troopers said two accidents claimed two lives apiece Saturday. Jimmy Witcher, 27, of Greenville, and Scotty Leo Sullivan, 21, of Anderson, both died wen the cars they were driving collided head-on inside the Anderson city limits at 4:35 a.m.

Jimmy T. Burbage, 24, and 21 year-old Roger Ellison, both of Moncks Corner, were both killed when the car Ellison was driving ran off U. S. 1-A and crashed south of Moncks Corner.

Dorothy Mae Monroe of Lake City, 53, died Saturday in a three-car accident on U. S. 52 in Florence County, and Henry Johnson Jr. of Lancaster died in a one-car accident at 6 p.m. Saturday on secondary road 47 in Lancaster County.

Myron C. Blankenship, 19, of Sheldon, died at 2 a.m. Saturday when the car he was driving collided with an 18-wheeler 1 1/2 miles south of Garden Corner in Beaufort County.

Troopers say Thurman Monroe Simmons, 21, of Dillon was killed Saturday when the car he was riding in ran off the road overturned four miles north of S. C. 34 in Dillon County. Mike Craig, 35, died 10:30 p.m. Friday in a motorcycle accident in Kershaw County.

Also, two South Carolinians were among at least nine persons killed in weekend traffic accidents in Georgia.

Broadus Allen Duncan, 27, of Liberty, S. C., was killed at 8:15 a.m. Saturday when the tractor-trailer he was driving ran off Interstate 85 five miles south of Carnesville in Franklin County and struck a bridge. Troopers said Duncan was thrown from the cab.

Danny Lee Whitt, 36, of Belton, S. C., was killed early Saturday when the car he was diving ran off Georgia 166 one mile west of Carrollton and overturned, the patrol said.
