Eugene Steadman, Sr. was born December 7, 1919 in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Andrew Steadman and Eugenia Harwell Smith.

According to the United States Census reported on April 17, 1930, Eugenia Steadman (29), rented a home in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama, with her sons, Eugene Steadman (10), Andrew Steadman (8), Fred M Steadman (6), Charles Steadman (2) and William Steadman (1 month). Eugenia Steadman and William Steadman were born in Alabama, Eugene Steadman was born in Georgia, Fred M Steadman and Charles Steadman were born in Ohio.

1940 Census Information:

According to the United States Census reported on April 15, 1940, Eugenia Foster (39) rented a home in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama with her children; Eugene Steadman (20), Fred Steadman (16), Charles Steadman (12), Joyce Foster (2), and Catherine Foster (3 months). Eugenia Foster, Joyce Foster and Catherine Foster were born in Alabama, Eugene Steadman was born in Georgia, Fred Steadman and Charles Steadman were born in Ohio.

ELGIN — Funeral services for Eugene Steadman, Sr., 87, of Elgin, will be held Friday, December 29, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Blaney Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Philip Blankenship will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday, December 28, 2006, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made to Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, SC 29045. Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Steadman died peacefully at his farm, Sunday, December 24, 2006. Born in Columbus Georgia, he was the son of the late Andrew Steadman and Eugenia Harwell Smith. Mr. Steadman had retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 32 years of service. From the Alabama National Guard, he enlisted in the U.S. Army May 25, 1940, at McClellan, Alabama, and was promoted to corporal December 30, 1940, in the Medical Corp at Fort Jackson. He was promoted to sergeant February 9, 1941, in the Medical Corp at Headquarters 4th Corp Area in Atlanta, Georgia, and then promoted to staff sergeant February 28, 1941. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in the 486th Military Police Escort Guard Company at Fort Custer, Michigan, August 15, 1943. Mr. Steadman was a member of Blaney Baptist Church and the U.S. Postal Retirees Association. Even after retirement, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and enjoyed working on his farm. He leaves his family with a lifetime of memories for which they are eternally grateful.

Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Steadman Holt of Columbia, and Faye Jeanette Steadman, of Chino, CA; two sons, Dr. Eugene Steadman Jr. of Alexandria, VA, and John Andrew Steadman Sr. of Thornton, CO; five grandchildren, John Steadman Jr., Chris Steadman, Jennifer Holt Hornsby, Ashley Steadman and Brandi Bouck; two greatgrandchildren, Haley “The Champ” O’Donnell and Emma Nicole Steadman; one sister, Joyce Olvera of Edgewater, FL; his beloved dogs, “The Boys,” Jake and Little One.

He was predeceased by his loving “Ba- Bay” of 57 years, Helen Rabon Steadman.

The family would like to thank the community of Elgin for the love and many acts of kindness extended to our entire family over the years and especially to our father. He will be forever missed and lives on in our hearts.
