JAMES GETTYS MCGIRT
CAMDEN — Services for Mr. James Gettys McGirt will be held 11:00 a.m. (viewing at 10:00 a.m.) Wednesday at Camden First United Methodist Church in Camden with burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, also in Camden. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McGirt died Friday, July 20, 2007, at his home in Camden. Born April 3, 1935, he was a son of the late Josephine and Paul B. McGirt and widower of the late Jacqueline B. McGirt.
He was a graduate of Boylan- Haven Mather Academy, North Carolina Central College and S.C. State College, where he received a master’s in education. He was a longtime educator in the Kershaw County school system, having served as an assistant principal and principal at Lugoff-Elgin High School and later as personnel director for the district. Active in the community, he served as a former member of the Kershaw County Disabilities and Special Needs Board and member of the Camden Archives and Museum Board, Boylan-Haven Mather Academy Alumni Association, and vice president of the Cedars Cemetery Association. James was greatnephew of Cyrus McGirt who donated the land for the historic African-American cemetery. He also served on the 1989 Class of Leadership South Carolina.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, now Camden First United Methodist, where he served in many capacities.
Survivors include a devoted friend, Patricia Ealey and her daughter, Kionna, both of Lancaster; a daughter, Tonyia M. McGirt of Bishopville; a sister, Minnie M. McMillan of Raleigh, N.C.; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Paul) McGirt of Atlanta; nephews, James N. McMillan and Gerald B. Coward of Washington, D.C.; cousins, Eddie C. (Charlotte) McGirt III of Chicago and Jacqueline G. McGirt of Greensboro, N.C.; and other loving relatives and friends.
