RICHLAND 1’s Montessori programs are holding application information sessions for parents. Children eligible for the 3-year-old kindergarten program must have had their third birthday by June 1; no transportation is provided for the half-day program. PALMETTO CENTER FOR THE ARTS students Eliani Camarena and Omar Oliphant won Gold Key awards at the 2008 S.C. Visual Arts Scholastic Competition. Camarena, a senior, took the Gold Key for her portfolio and received Honorable Mention for her drawing, “Time of the Clocks.” Oliphant, a junior, won for his computer art creation “Armageddon.” Junior Lyla Shon received a Silver Key award for her painting, “Ugly Birds.” Alan Youngblood, also a junior, took an Honorable Mention for “Corrosion” in the digital imagery category.

RIDGE VIEW HIGH

SPRING VALLEY HIGH

SPRING VALLEY will host a Free Application for Student Aid (FASA) workshop 7-8:30 tonight in the Little Theater. Seniors and their parents will get help completing the eligibility forms necessary for need-based aid.

SPRING VALLEY’S MATH TEAM took third place in Division 1 schools at the High School Mathematics Contest Dec. 8 at USC. Members include Jake Baker, Jessie Ge, Valentin Lazar, John McElyen, Chris Pasco, Rassolov Peter, Vladimir Plotkin and Harry Richman. Richman won a $8,000 per year scholarship by his top score of 134. Peter Rassolov had the fifth-highest score, a 116, on the written exam.

KANEISHA PAYTON won Spring Valley’s Poetry Out Loud School Competition. She will represent the school on the regional level in February; state competition is slated for March. Other participants included Shannon Baker, first runner-up; Veronika Bethea, K.T. Carpenter, Jazmin Ricks and Denia Taylor.

SPRING VALLEY students who submitted works to the Twin Oaks Silk Screen and Print Competitions did well by the school. Casey Taylor took a Special Judges Award for “First Week.” Awards of Excellence went to Barbara Stieglitz for “Slipknot” and Yvonne Jones for “K. Fishcher.”

INTERAMERICAN UNIVERSITY STUDIES INSTITUTE is offering a Spanish immersion summer program in Costa Rica. Open to high school students interested in environmental biology, the program combines intensive language instruction, individual homestays and field trips to three areas of the country. To be eligible, students must be ages 15-17 with two years of high school Spanish and a course in biology (by June 2008). Priority application deadline is Friday, Feb. 8. Scholarships available. NOMINATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED until Thursday, Jan. 31, for the Governor’s School of South Carolina at the College of Charleston. Students interested in attending or learning more about the Governor’s School should contact their guidance counselors. Admission to the four-week residential summer program is limited to academically gifted high school juniors who are legal residents of South Carolina and have been nominated by their high schools. Admission is competitive, Governor’s Scholars are usually in the top 10 percent of their class. This year the school will offer courses in such topics as law and society; biomedical science, psychology of world events, biochemistry; the Middle East and Africa; and global perspectives on human rights. LOWE’S CHARITABLE AND EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION is accepting applications through Saturday, March 15, for the Lowe’s Scholarship and the Carl S. Buchan Scholarship. The Lowe’s Scholarship is for high school seniors and current college students who plan to enroll full-time in an undergraduate program at any accredited two- or four-year college or university in the U.S. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership and community involvement. Carl Buchan Scholarship applicants must also have at least 90 days of service with the company as of Jan. 1 (or be the spouse or dependent of an employee with at least 90 days of service as of Jan. 1), and must still be employed (or be the dependent of an employee who is still employed) at the time the awards are announced in May.
