School’s out after Sunday fire – Lugoff-Elgin High expected to reopen Wednesday

Classes were canceled today at Lugoff-Elgin High School after a fire erupted Sunday afternoon in a storage room at the school.

Firefighters from four companies responded to the blaze, which began about 5:30 p.m., Lugoff Fire Chief Robert Polksaid Sunday. The cause of the fire is unknown, he said.

“The damage inside the room is so significant it will take some time to investigate,” Polk said.

The fire was contained to the one room, which housed technology equipment, but smoke poured through wing 500 and into the cafeteria and kitchen, he said.

While the smoke was cleared Sunday evening, the Kershaw County school superintendent determined that air quality inside the school prevented reopening after the three-day Labor Day weekend.

Mary Ann Byrd, communication director for the Kershaw County school system, said officials anticipate reopening on Wednesday but would make a final decision today following air quality checks.

She said no one was inside the wing at the time of the fire, although some coaches were in another part of the school located on U.S. Highway 1.

In addition to the Lugoff Fire Department, the Blaney Volunteer Fire Department, the Pine Grove Fire Department and one unit from Camden responded to the scene.

Byrd said the football team was still scheduled to practice Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
