Paul L. Grooms, who served as mayor of Elgin for 13 years, died Tuesday. He was 80.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church’s cemetery.

Grooms, a U.S. Army veteran, who received the Purple Heart during the Korean War, served as mayor from 1994 to 2007, according to his obituary from Powers Funeral Home.

He was a volunteer firefighter and former fire chief with the Blaney Fire Department, the obituary said.

Grooms also was a deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
