RICHLAND 1 has been awarded $560,000 for the 2009 funding year from E-Rate, the federal Schools and Libraries Program. E-Rate helps schools and libraries in obtaining affordable telecommunications and Internet access. Luke Fox, Richland 1’s executive director of information technology says the funding will be used to provide local and long-distance telephone services, cell phone and data services and paging services for the district.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE APPLICATIONS FOR ZONTA INTERNATIONAL’S 2010 Young Women in Public Affairs Award are available from high school guidance counselors and at www.zonta.org. Winners of the local $1,500 awards are automatically entered in the Zonta District scholarship competition for an award of $1,000. District winners may vie for the international scholarship worth an additional $3,000. The goal of the YWPA program is to encourage young women (ages 16-20) to participate in public and political life by recognizing commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and dedication to the advancement of the status of women.
