Funeral services to honor the life of the Honorable William R. “Bill” Hyman, U.S. Army (ret.),72, of Elgin will be held Sunday, April 25, 2010 at 4:00 PM at Blaney Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. David Brannen will officiate with the Rev. Phillip Blankenship assisting. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 24, 2010 from 8:00 -9:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff Elgin Chapel. Memorials may be made in memory of Mr.Hyman to Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, South Carolina 29045 or SC Oncology Associates, 166 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, SC 29210
Mr. Hyman died Thursday, April 22, 2010. Born July 13, 1937, William was one of nine children of Mae and Hoyt Hyman.
Mr. Hyman joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and was an outstanding soldier earning many awards and Letters of Commendation. He served in Korea, Okinawa, Germany, the Panama Canal Zone, and Vietnam. He retired as a Command Sergeant Major in 1975 after 21 ½ years of service. After retiring he worked for the Kershaw County Sheriffs Department and Wolfe Mechanical in Lugoff where he retired once again. He also served as The Municipal Judge of the Town of Elgin for 26 years.
Mr. Hyman was a member of Blaney Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, chairman of the deacons and various other committees. He was a member of the American Legion Post 182 where he was a past Commander; Lugoff Elgin Masonic Lodge 411 where he was a past Master; Order of the Eastern Star Leslie Zemp OES #111. He also was Elgin’s Citizen of the Year in 1996. Mr. Hyman gave of himself to his community and its people. To know him was to love him. His foremost calling was his family. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Valerie Miles Hyman; his sons, Michael Hyman ( Beth) of Elgin, James Brian, Sr of Elgin; five grandchildren, Shannon, James, Steven and Colby Hyman and Jeston Woodhall; one great granddaughter, Kaylee Kirkland, his angel: two sisters, Margie Love of Kingstree and Sally Mejia (Tony) of Chino Hills, CA. He was preceded in death by his six brothers.
The family would like to express their gratitude and love to Dr. Leland McElveen, Dr. Mark Mayson, Dr. James McAlpine, Dr. Donald Alexander and all of their wonderful staffs.
