COLUMBIA – A memorial service for Kathryn Hobbs Ward, 80, of Columbia, will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday, March 17, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 155 Blythewood Road, Blythewood, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Cathy Jamieson-Ogg, the Rev. Ken Jackson and the Rev. Scott Bratton. The family will receive friends from 6 unitl 8 o’clock Wednesday evening at Trinity United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church, 2666 Hwy 1 S., Elgin, SC 29045 or to Alzheimer’s Association, S.C. Chapter, 3223 Sunset Blvd., Suite 100, West Columbia, SC 29169. Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mrs. Ward died Monday, March 14, 2011. Born in Hobbsville, NC, on Christmas Day, 1930, Mrs. Ward was a daughter of the late Harry C. Hobbs and Edla Hollowell Hobbs. She served as assistant clerk of court in her native Gates County, NC, during the 1970s and was active in Hobbsville Baptist Church.
After moving to Elgin in 1999, she became a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and later became a resident of The Lutheran Rice Estate where she was lovingly nurtured by its caring staff.
Survivors include her son, Gary Ward and daughter-in-law, Carol J.G. Ward; grandson, Hoke Ward, all of Blythewood; and a sister, Gwendolyn Hendrix of Suffolk, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, James Melvin Ward, and by her brother, Larry C. Hobbs.
