Born December 16, 1926 in Blaney, SC, she was the daughter of the late John Lee Kirkland, Jr., and Emily Ross Kirkland. At the age of 35, she was left with five children to raise after the death of her husband, George Washington Barr. She was also pre-deceased by two brothers, Paul W. Kirkland, E. Herbert Kirkland, and one sister, Pauline Kirkland Driggers.
She is survived by her children, Sylvia (Ted) Gundrum, Annette (Tim) Grahl, Michael Barr, Jean (Phil) Timms and Cathy (Bobby) Price; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; along with the numerous children she loved and cared for as their caregiver.
Mrs. Barr was a member of South Lexington Baptist Church, a member of the Seniors Serving Jesus SS Class and Seasoned to Serve Senior Adults Class. At the age of 72, Margie started a pillow ministry, “Agape Stitchers”, which grew to over 20 members and continues on today. This ministry is part of the volunteer group of MSA Hospice, formally known as Tri-County Hospice. The last five months, she was the recipient of those same pillows that she so lovingly created for others. Margie saw an opportunity to not only minister to hospice patients, but to minister to grieving families as well by creating “Memory Bears” out of deceased loved ones clothing for keepsakes.
Visitation will be held at Barr-Price Funeral Home and Crematorium, Lexington Chapel, on Wednesday, September 27th at 11:00 am. The service will follow at 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens in West Columbia.
