Obituary for Rev. Howard Sylvester Price
COLUMBIA – Reverend Howard S. Price, Sr., 95, husband of Virginia Shuman Price, passed from this world to be with his Heavenly Father on January 18, 2019 at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 4, 1923 in Blaney, SC, Howard was the son of the late Will Price and Emma Jane Price. He attended Columbia Bible College, received a BA Degree from the University of South Carolina, and a Master of Divinity Degree from Wake Forest Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. After his ordination, he served 62 years as a Baptist minister serving Riverside Baptist, Congaree Baptist, First Baptist of Columbia, Central Baptist and Eastwood Baptist Churches in Columbia, SC and Pleasant Grove Baptist in Rockingham, NC, retiring at the age of 82.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years; a son, Howard (Buddy) Price, Jr. (Maree); two daughters, Sylvia Price Pruitt and Edna Price Strange; six grandchildren, Lee Price (Roxanne), Ben Price, Zoe Owen (Sion), Trey Pruitt (Patricia), Robbie Pruitt (Irene), and Kristie Freeland; 13 great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren. He is also survived by brother, Jack Price (Barbara) and sister, Jill Mooneyham (Howard).
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by three sisters and their husbands: Ann Kornrumph (Ricky), Margaret Berry (Frank) and Betty Lail (Hubert); and two brothers and their wives: Jimmy Price (Ruth) and Harold Price (Earlene).
He was born in the sand-hills and his path led him to be a brother, husband, father, pastor, reverend, woodsman, farmer and friend. He ministered to everyone from senators to the homeless and never met a stranger. He was bigger than life and will leave this world having touched the lives of so many people with laughter and love.
A visitation with family will be from 5 pm until 7 pm on Monday, January 21, Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext. and a Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 10:00 am, at Hope Baptist Church, 2117 Clemson Road, with burial at Fairfax Town Cemetery, Fairfax, SC. at 3 pm. Memorials may be made to Hope Baptist Church, or the charity of your choice.
