Obituary of Larry Nelson

ELGIN – Graveside service for Lawrence Wayne “Larry” Nelson, 78, will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Rose Cemetery.  The Rev. Ken Jackson and the Rev. Wilson Nelson will officiate.  The family will receive friends Wednesday 5-7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Lugoff.  Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church.

    Mr. Nelson passed away at home on Saturday, October 5, 2019.  Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Harvey Nelson Sr. and Inez Ross Nelson.  A 1959 graduate of Dentsville High School, he retired from DuPont.

    Mr. Nelson was a people person and never met a stranger.  He loved karaoke, going on cruises, golfing and was an avid Gamecock fan.  He was dedicated in working to make sure the youth in Elgin had recreation programs.  Many children have been blessed to enjoy baseball, softball and basketball in Elgin.  Larry also coached for many years for the Kershaw County Recreation Dept.  He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

    Surviving are his brothers, Harold Donald Nelson (Josephine) of Stockbridge, Ga. And Harvey Wilson Nelson Jr. (Mary Winn) of Florida; and granddaughter, Deirdre Hope Nelson-Storrs (Alex) of Elgin.  He was predeceased by sons, Lindsay Dharel Nelson and Lawrence Wayne Nelson.
