Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Wray “C.W.” Wooten and Willie Mae Nettles Wooten and the loving wife of 63 years to William H. “Bill” Mattox. Being the wife of a former pastor and 29 year Air Force chaplain, Shelba and her family moved 24 times throughout their marriage, following Bill’s military assignments and ministry. During those years, Shelba’s careers included federal civil service, home building, and selling real estate. She also served on the town of Elgin Zoning Committee. She enjoyed shopping, interior decorating, camping (or “glamping” as she would call it), giving gifts, and cooking for her family and friends. She was an excellent homemaker who loved spending time with her family. She also held a special place in her heart for her beloved poodles: Puff, Fritz, Yogi, and Teddy. Shelba loved celebrating Christmas and would proudly display her collection of over 50 nativity sets. She was a longtime member of Blaney Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, Shelba is survived by her children, William Jeffrey “Jeff” Mattox, Penny Camell Mattox, and Kerry Scott Mattox; grandchildren, Thomas Jeffrey Mattox, Jack Ryan Mattox, and Jenna Lynne Mattox; her sister, Dorothy “Dot” Wooten Ryall; and sister-in-law, Nancy Strickland Wooten.
