Obituary for Bernice W Smith

Mrs. Bernice Wood Smith was born January 9, 1945, in Kershaw County. She departed this earthly life on March 20, 2022, at MUSC Health Kershaw Medical Center.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Walter Wood and Pearl Nelson Wood. She was educated in the public schools of Kershaw County where she graduated from Jackson High School. After graduation, Bernice would move to and live in Brooklyn, New York. In her early adult life, she met and married Jessie Smith of Bishopville, South Carolina. They were married for fifty years. Bernice and Jessie were the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Miranda and Jessica.

Bernice was employed at Willowbrook State Hospital located in Staten Island, New York. When she moved back home, she became employed by the Midlands Center in Columbia, South Carolina where she retired. Bernice was a faithful member of Sutton Branch Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish Bernice’s memory include her loving husband, Jessie Smith of Lugoff, South Carolina; two daughters, Miranda Roxane Smith of Lugoff, South Carolina and Jessica Nadine Smith of Elgin, South Carolina; three amazing grandchildren, Olivia Gabrielle Latimer, Shane Nigel Latimer both of Elgin, South Carolina and Mekiah Margaret Baltimore-Moorer of Bishopville, South Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Smith of Bishopville, South Carolina and Diane (Woodrow) Thomas of Bishopville, South Carolina; two brothers-in-law, both of Bishopville, South Carolina; one special nephew, Michael Wood; special great-nephew, Miquel Wood of Lugoff, South Carolina; three special nieces, Tyesha M. Stover of Lugoff, South Carolina, Trinnie (Ronnie) Lawhorn of Lugoff, South Carolina and Shawn R. Stover of Columbia, South Carolina; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
