Nicholas P. Lampshire, 72, retired international banking executive and dedicated Camden city leader, died peacefully on September 16th in Camden, South Carolina. He is survived by Pauline Williams (Polly) Lampshire his devoted wife of thirty-seven years. He was the son of the late Wallace Ralph Lampshire and Alda Claudia L’Heureux Lampshire.
Nick attended George Washington HS (1967) Alexandria, VA where his outgoing, lively spirit ensured he was voted “most likely to succeed”. There he found his love of rowing and became an outstanding oarsman which he continued at Brown University (1971) rowing and winning The Head of the Charles in 1970. His closest lifelong friends came from his academic days and his teammates.
After Brown, Nick worked at Chase Manhattan Bank 1972-1982 NY International Banking where he lived and worked overseas in Japan, Iran Australia. He also worked at Fleet Bank 1983-1985 Providence, RI before marrying his wife Polly in 1985 and moving to Denver. There he worked at Colorado National Bank 1987-1992 and ended up heading the Personal Banking Dept.
Nick and Polly moved to Camden from Denver in 1993.Their love of Camden grew and Nick believed his extensive business experience and his background of growing up in an historic town gave him the necessary skills to make sound business decisions and provide insight into the issues facing Camden for the future.
Running for his third term on Camden City Council, he said “There is so much left to be done. Camden is an amazing town … its remarkable how many things we have going for us.”
Nick and Polly led the national nomination process for Mulberry Plantation to be recognized by the United States Department of the Interior, establishing Mulberry as a National Historic Landmark.
Nick was elected to Camden City Council 1998-2006. In addition, he was deeply involved as Chairman of the Downtown Redevelopment Authority helping to revitalize Camden’s downtown. He served as board member of Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments, Finance Committee member of The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County, Chairman of the Camden Historic Landmark Preservation Commission, and board member of Central Carolina Technical College where he was honored in 2014 by the Kershaw County Council for his work to expand CCT campus and support the technical college system. He also served as President of The Camden Rotary Club in 2007-2008.
Nick was known for his kindness, generosity, and wonderful sense of humor. He leaves behind an extended family including sisters: Susan Lampshire of Virginia, Claudia Galagan (Christopher), Rhode Island, Annette Lampshire, Arizona, niece Amy Kenworthy (George), Australia, nephew Asa Kenworthy (Jenna), Australia, niece Justine Galagan, Rhode Island, and nephew Patrick Galagan (Jen) Rhode Island.
Additionally, Nick was a cherished member of Polly’s extended family: brother David Williams, Massachusetts, her late sister Rachel Zebrowski, Oklahoma, nieces Rachel Kremer (Brian), North Carolina, Ana Williams, Colorado, Isabel Bacon (Chase), Massachusetts, nephew Tony Bacon, New York, nieces Serena Zebrowski and Pauline Zebrowski, California.
