Wilfredo Velez of Cassatt, South Carolina | 1972 – 2023 | Obituary

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Wilfredo Velez, age 51, will be held at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at 5:00 PM.  Pastor Brian Wieneke and Pastor Manuel Alvarez will officiate.  Mac Williams will serve as translator.  Visitation will be from 3:00-5:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Open Hearts and Helping Hands, 612-A Lafayette Avenue, Camden, SC 29020.

Wilfredo “Wil” Velez was born in Chicago IL in 1972 to Puerto Rican parents. Wilfredo grew up in Puerto Rico where he attended school until graduating from High School in 1990. Following High School graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served a 28-year career. He performed as a heavy equipment operator, petroleum products handler, administrative clerk, sexual harassment and assault response program coordinator, and senior human resources supervisor. He served in Iraq from late 2006 to early 2008. Upon retirement in 2018 he studied human services at Central Carolina Community College. He also completed a certification in gerontology. 

Wilfredo worked as a Community Health Worker at Access Kershaw in Lugoff, SC, and as a Victim’s/family advocate at the Family Resource Center in Camden, SC. Wilfredo was an entrepreneur and philanthropist who enjoyed helping the local communities. He was also active in his church where he acted as treasurer. He was also the President of the local Christian Motorcyclist Association’s chapter in Elgin, SC. He was married to Maria Lopez-Velez with whom he raised six children. They resided in Cassatt, SC where they enjoyed time working with the community and spending time with their seven grandchildren. 

In addition to his wife, Maria, Wilfredo is survived by their children, Jose Vasquez of Cassatt; Wilfredo Velez of Cassatt; Brian Velez (Alissa) of Springfield, MA; Frank William Velez (Destany) of Hartsville; Luis Vasquez of Cassatt; Steven Feliciano of Baltimore, MD; and Paula Michelle Velez of Cassatt; grandchildren Ryleigh Velez, Brian Velez, Aiden Velez, Ivy Velez, Sofia Young, Julia Young, and Brison Velez; mother, Consuelo Crespo Quinones; as well as his brother Frank William Velez-Quinones (Vivan) and sister Lizveth Velez Quinones.

Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
