The Lewisville Lions football team won’t be without a head football coach much longer.
The position opened up last month when Leon Boulware stepped down to accept the head football coaching and athletic director positions at Lugoff-Elgin High School. Interest in the Lewisville job was obviously high, with the school receiving more than 30 applications within a few days of the job being officially posted. School Athletic Director Kirk Cannon told the News & Reporter last week that the search was conducted quickly but was very thorough.
“We narrowed the search down to eight candidates and did eight interviews on Thursday of last week,” Cannon said on March 12.
Cannon said he and Principal Dr. Kelly Grant had several discussions about the opening and the candidates and were able to settle on a selection. The name has been submitted to the Chester County School Board for approval. The board is scheduled to meet and potentially approve the hire on Monday.
Trent Usher, who served as Boulware’s defensive coordinator, has been serving as the team’s interim head coach.
Boulware quickly built Lewisville into a contender, going 21-4 in two seasons at the helm of his first varsity football head coaching job. The Lions advanced to the third round of the playoffs in 2022 before losing to eventual state champion Christ Church. This past season, the team’s only regular season loss came on the road against Oceanside Collegiate, the team that went on to win the AA state title. They fell in the playoffs in the second round to St. Joe’s, a private school that played for the upperstate championship. The success goes beyond just wins and losses, though, with Lewisville having seven of its games played with a running clock because of huge leads. The team also had eight players sign to play a sport at the college level in a signing ceremony last month.
